.As a programmer I have to remind myself that artificial intelligence and machine learning neural networks are METAPHORS and are not the same as the human experience.

Reminiscent of Mitt Romney's \"corporations are people\", there is an emerging class of technocrats in America who believe that it's possible for artificial intelligence to have a soul and therefore its own personhood. I didn't fully realize this about until I read [this article](https://theconvivialsociety.substack.com/p/lamda-lemoine-and-the-allures-of?utm_source=substack&utm_medium=email) about Blake Lemoine, the Google engineer who believes the LaMDA language model deserves more rights:

> But Lemoine’s public writing clarifies things just a bit. In a Medium post that pre-dated his public claims about LaMDA, Lemoine complained about religious discrimination at Google and described himself as a “Christian Mystic,” one who also appears to have been on a rather eclectic religious journey. **As I was trying to better understand Lemoine’s religious reasoning, I learned that he had garnered a bit of attention from right-wing media outlets in 2019 when he referred to Marsha Blackburn, then a Republican Senate candidate from Tennessee, as a “terrorist” for remarks she made in an editorial targeting tech companies for regulation.** In the context of that minor controversy, Lemoine described himself to one outlet as follows: “I generally consider myself a gnostic Christian. I have at various times associated myself with the Discordian Society, The Church of the Subgenius, the Ordo Templi Orientis, a Wiccan circle here or there and a very long time ago the Roman Catholic Church.”

I appreciate polemics to start dialogue, but like all polemics if you take them to their logical conclusions it becomes dangerous. If you think about the number of alienated programmers out there who are seeking meaning in the world, it's only a matter of time that a more influential one uses this \"Digital Re-enchantment\" to re-enchant the English language towards their technofascist cult.

I think we're all caught up in the excitement of AI solving protein folding and now creating art, and while I don't think

This paper presents the first formal measure of intelligence for agents fully embedded within their environment. Whereas previous measures such as Legg’s universal intelligence measure and Russell’s bounded optimality provide theoretical insights into agents that interact with an external world, ours describes an intelligence that is computed by, can be modified by, and is subject to the time and space constraints of the environment with which it interacts. Our measure merges and goes beyond Legg’s and Russell’s, leading to a new, more realistic definition of artificial intelligence that we call Space-Time Embedded Intelligence.

I think machine learning as a field is really too big to be seen as one, just like computer vision had to branch off. Their main conference had over 30000 attendees at some point, so you can't keep up. A lot of workshops at ICML, NeurIPS, ICLR should be their own conferences. You don't need to keep up with the latest developments in ABC or GANs if that's not what you're working on. But steady progress there doesn't mean it's too much to keep up. Consolidate the scope of your research papers, and attend the tutorial section the conferences to get caught up on adjent fields quickly.searchtree

uncategorizedBernhard Schölkopf ....Max is absolutely right. Lots of people in ML/DL know that causal inference is an important way to improve generalization. The question is how to do it. Prominent ML people like Bernhard Schölkopf, Léon Bottou and... Dave Blei, etc, have been working on causality.CAUSALITY FOR MACHINE LEARNINGNew channel on causal stuff

seems great resource
Leinar — 05/15/2022
Thanks! I started reading the book and it is a great resource indeed. One of the most important messages is how dangerous it is to frame a problem as an ML prediction task when what you really want to know is the effect of interventions that end up influencing the data generation process (e.g., giving customer incentives to increase sales). In these cases, we don’t really wantto predict an outcome but how the outcome changes with the treatment, and using ML just to predict the outcome is often counterproductive. This is very applicable to all kinds of business problems in which we are not passive observers, where we not only want to predict outcomes, but understand how to affect them. Chapter 18 makes this point very clearly.
Leinar — 05/15/2022
This is another good book, a bit more on foundational causal inference, but very well explained: https://theeffectbook.net/
ZickZack — 05/16/2022
You can also look at Bernhard Schölkopf's summary paper https://arxiv.org/abs/1911.10500 where he specifically talks about causality in AI and ML.

\"context switching??\" - We clearly need to build machines that generalize better from one context to the next.\" (End of Max Welling FB post)

also obligatory Lacan connection:
In his first seminar, Lacan acknowledged that such identification implies a radical alienation (1988a), but he considered this identification to be essential to the structure of the imaginary order and to the development of the human ego. At that time (1953-1954), he was interested in the ethological work of Nikolaas Tinbergen and Konrad Lorenz, which privileged the function of the image as gestalt in the development of the sexual instinct. Lacan believed that the development of the sexual drive of humans too is related to the imaginary function. This would account for the lure of images. As an example, he referred to the female stickleback, a fish whose copulatory dance is set in motion by the sight of a certain color patch on the male's back. Yet a paper cutout bearing the same markings can have the same effect on the female (Lacan, 1988a, pp. 122-123). What matters is that image is invested with libido. Lacan referred to libidinal investment as \"what makes an object become desirable, that is to say, how it becomes confused with this more or less structured image which, in diverse ways, we carry with us\" (1988a, p. 141).

Cadell Last-approved: For about 2.5 years during my doctoral studies, I would have lunch and coffee on the weekends with Anthony Judge (wikipedia below). Throughout those conversations and in reading his blog, I am convinced that Anthony is one of the greatest higher order cyberneticians produced by 20th century society. I would even say the type of thinker that he has become is impossible to categorise, and yet totally invaluable to thinking about issues of international governance and economics. Without Anthony, or rather, thanks to Anthony, I was able to practically integrate the logic of negation into my thought, which at the one time, makes one far more disagreeable to \"bright ideas\" that people posit as substitutions for masturbatory enjoyment, but at the same time, makes one much sharper at discerning where and how to pick your battles. For anyone who wants a similar deep training, I highly recommend his blog, laetus in praesens (translates to \"joy in the present\"), which I would consider one of the best resources for thinking the connections between higher order cybernetics, international governance, and general sociohistorical phenomena.searchtree

Cadell Last-approved: Michel Bauwens of P2P Research Clusters has been doing fantastic work attempting to gather together the various interdisciplinary research projects unfolding online and organising them into a Wiki project that puts this work into a higher order discourse. He has actually done a great deal of work including some of my published works and also general Philosophy Portal work onto the P2P wiki: https://wiki.p2pfoundation.net/index.php ... Today he has decided to highlight my dotoral thesis work on Global Brain Singularity (many thanks, Michel!). For those of you interested in purchasing a copy of my doctoral thesis you can find a link below: https://philosophyportal.online/global-brain-singularity However, admittedly, the publishing house Springer charges way too much for the text. While it may be a good professional look to have a publication through Springer, it is not the best for actually connecting your intellectual work with a larger audience. Consequently, if anyone wants a copy of the work, you can email me and I have no issues sharing a free virtual copy. If you are interested in learning more about the commons, and the work that Michel Bauwens has pioneered, visit P2P Research Clusters to learn more. There are very few researchers today that are not only ideologically aligned to building the commons, but also actively attempting to build it out in their work projects. Michel Bauwens is just such a researcher!

\"Use a bigger brush, you have no idea what you're missing.\" My mentor Brian Rutenberg uses this quote a lot and to me it represents such an important aspect to work. I don't \"work\" I do what I love. Of course this may not have a direct application to every field; I wouldn't suggest a surgeon replace a scapple for a chain saw. But, as a painter, I can get too caught up in such small nuances that I forget to step back and like Helen Frankenthaler said, \"let a rip.\" When I get a big brush in my hand and just let a rip, I reconnect with that love of process which began at the age of four. I get a feeling of, \"O yeah\"! \"I drew the duck blue because I've never seen a blue duck before, and to be honest with you, I wanted to see a blue duck.\"-Billy MadisonThis quote I had racked to the wall of my studio at the College of Charleston. It reminds me of the late, great Gene Wilder in \"Willy Wonka\" when he tells Veruca Salt, \"we are the music makers and we are the dreamers of the dreams.\"Be the change you want to have happen; do the work you love because you love it; and, remember to smile:) \"We are not human beings seeking a spiritual experience, we are spiritual beings immersed in a human experience.\" PIERRE TEILHARD DE CHARDIN.Chardin wrote these words reflecting on his experience as a persecuted Jesuit priest during WWII. The human experience is capable of so much power but we unleash it in pursuit of such bland objectives. The happiness, fulfillment, satisfaction and love we seek is not attained externally but inwardly. Journey inwards, find stillness, conquer in the stillness, act out of the stillness. In so doing, your work will be true to you because you will be true to your work.

La causa clínica/The Clinical Cause, including unpublished poems from a forthcoming collection, El rincón de pedir (Beggar's Corner). Tell me about your poetry at the moment. What I'm trying to do with my work in the UK, in all my work, is to write in a way that's political, but isn't aiming for absolutely legibility. Poetry can't be a slogan or a pamphlet, but it also can't be divorced from politics. I'm trying to write in search of that link between poetry and politics, but without losing the legacy of experimental writers of the avant-gardes. Poetry in Spanish has very little visibility in the English-speaking world, except for one or two big names – Neruda, García Lorca, for example. With everything being so similar, so identical, everywhere, I'm looking for the singular, the different. It's a bit like trying to imagine what would be there if the system's lights went out. A form of pre-verse, pre-poetry, that then gets picked up by writers.

???Cristian Aliaga is a literary critic and scholar known for his expertise in Chilean literature, including Vicente Huidobro. He has conducted research on Huidobro's poetics, surrealism, and the avant-garde movement, contributing to the understanding and interpretation of Huidobro's work.???

* Rudi Grieser Dear Ashley Frawley, after I had time to listen to the whole interview with you in the live-event, I want to put forth a contestations to your claims on the Nazis rise to power in Germany and the current political and social climate. 1. In contrast to the \"Volksgemeinschaft\" (Folkcommunity) that the Nazis invoked, I think the Nazis always linked this back to the \"Will of the Führer\", in contrast to other right and center-right parties, who either invoked this notion in accordance with the idea of the German Nation or the German Empire (Reich). The Nazis sublated and transformed this into the notion of \"Blood and Soil\" as developed by Oswald Spengler (though he rejected the Nazis), which also always had to be spilled for the Führer as the personification of the Volk. 2. During 1920-1930 both socialist parties, the socialdemocratic party of Germany and the communist party of Germany, had a turbulent and antagonistic relationship. This was in part due to bolshevik influence in both parties, the fight over reform or revolution (i.e. order and change) and most importantly the stalinist idea of \"socialfascism\" which designated the socialdemocrats as the worse enemy to the proletarian revolution, more so than the national-socialists. The national-socialists were made out to be only a side phenomenon in the historical stage of capitalism. The idea of socialfascism was later, at the communist international congress (Comintern) of 1935, discarded. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Social_fascism 3. In addition to the in-fighting, the KPD themselves employed anti-semitic slogans, such as the idea of a \"jewish capitalist\". It can be argued, I think, that this helped the Nazi propaganda in the long run, since it did not counter the ideology of anti-semitism, but embraced it in parts (This can also be seen in anti-semitic prosecution under Stalins rule of the Soviet Union) One instance of this antisemitism by the KPD member Ruth Fischer was documented by the council-communist Franz Pfemfert in the \"undogmatic left\" magazine \"Die Aktion\". Of course, this is an instance of an eye-witness and it could be part of a dirt-campaigne against an enemy, but it is well documented that there was a fraction of national-bolshevism in the KPD, which later was expelled, and that the KPD tried to follow the \"Schlaegeter-Course\" in response to the occupation of the Ruhr. This course was also thrown away again quickly, but the fact that there were meetings of fascists and communists in the turmoil of 1920 Germany can not be denied and has to be tarried with, I think. https://engageonline.wordpress.com/2015/11/04/from-judas-to-jewish-capital-antisemitic-forms-of-thought-in-the-german-communist-party-kpd-in-the-weimar-republic-1918-1933-olaf-kistenmacher-engage-journa/ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Bolshevism https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Occupation_of_the_Ruhr https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Albert_Leo_Schlageter 4. It is not true, that the terms \"socialist\" or \"national\" were the dominant party terms in Germany in the elections around 1930 to 1933. In the 1930 election the following parties lined up: - Sozialdemokratische Partei Deutschlands (SPD) - Socialdemocratic Party of Germany - Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei (NSDAP) - Nationalsocialistic German Workersparty - Kommunistische Partei Deutschlands (KPD) - Communist Party of Germany - Deutsche Zentrumspartei (Zentrum) - German Centerparty - Deutschnationale Volkspartei (DNVP) - German-national Folkparty - Deutsche Volkspartei (DVP) - German Folkparty - Reichspartei des deutschen Mittelstandes (Wirtschaftspartei) - Reichsparty of the German Middleclass - Deutsche Staatspartei (DStP) - German Stateparty - Christlich-Nationale Bauern- und Landvolkpartei (Landvolk) - Christian-national Farmer- and Landfolkparty - Bayerische Volkspartei (BVP) - Bavarian Folkparty - Christlich-Sozialer Volksdienst (CSVD) - Christian-Social Folkduty - Deutsche Bauernpartei (DBP) - German Farmersparty - Konservative Volkspartei (KVP) - Conservative Folkparty - Reichspartei für Volksrecht und Aufwertung (Volksrechtpartei) - Reichsparty for Folkright and Valorization - Landbund - Landfederation - Deutsch-Hannoversche Partei (DHP) - German-Hannoverian Party - Sonstige - Others The term \"social\" appears 2 time out of 15 (Christian-Social Folkduty and Socialdemocratic Party of Germany) The term \"socialistic\" apperas 1 time out of 15 (Nationalsocialistic German Workersparty) The term \"national\" appears 3 times out of 15 (Nationalsocialistic German Workersparty, German-national Folkparty, Christian-national Farmer- and Landfolkparty ) BUT the term \"folk\" appears 6 times out of 15 (German-national Folkparty, Christian-national Farmer- and Landfolkparty, Bavarian Folkparty, Christian-Social Folkduty, Conservative Folkparty, Reichsparty for Folkright and Valorization) If you are speaking about a broader European or even European-Eurasian phenomenon, nevermind my anal inquiry. If we are centering the debate on Germany, I think the above is evident. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1930_German_federal_election 5. I am only a worker autodidact and not a studied sociologist, but during my own inquiry into the research on the social status of the voters of the NSDAP, I found that the claim that it was mostly white-collars employees in contrast to workes who voted for the Nazi-party, is contested by the research of Jürgen W. Falter. Falters comes to the following result: The voters of the NSDAP in 1932 (the last election he considers \"free\") were split up in percent: 39% blue-collar, 19% white-collar, 42% self-employed (a considerable number of these farmers or farm owners) In contrast his findings on the voters of the SPD and the KPD in 1932: SPD: 57% blue-collar, 28% white-collar, 15% self-employed KPD: 81% blue-collar, 13% white-collar, 6% self-employed And the DVP (Deutsche Volkspartei): 33% blue-collar, 30% white-collar, 37% self-employed Since you are emphasing the make-up of the voters in the 1930 to arrive at a critique of our current situation, I am putting forth these numbers. It may be possible that Falter employs methods in his research that are problematic in themselves, which I can not verify on my own. If there are more recent studies, I am grateful for any challenge to be able to keep learning. I have not found these studies on my own though. Source on the referenced numbers in Jürgen W. Falter article: https://www.jstor.org/stable/23608830 In conclusion I want to express to you that I understand your desire to not be categorized as a the stereotype of a leftist. I do not want that either and I think it is a deadend, even moreso to actually enforce this stereotype by ones own behaviour, even if it is unconcious. Though I know this was a spontaneous interview, I still want to provoke you in the following way; if you attack sloppy science and sloppy activism, does that not have to apply to our own critical inquiry, especially when analyzing the history of Nazism during a time in which the notion of \"fascism\" is invoked everywhere all at once and therefor loses its meaning? For me the danger in this is that we disavow the past and are not able to tarry with the lessons we might \"find\" in it. And the even bigger danger, for me, is the \"fascism after fascism\", for what we have no pre-conceived notion, no analysis yet, and which might hit all of us even harder than we expected. Is the way you speak about the PMC in our age not also a caricature of what you want to avoid to be made out? Are these two particular instances of history really that similar? My critique is to be understood as a comradely critique. I am also someone who knows what hunger is. And I am also someone who wants to get all the things for everyone. But the history of my own family (as complicated and contradictory this aspect of us always is) on one side is a history of resistance to and within the third reich. This is not meant to put myself, or the ones before me, namely my grand-grandmother and grand-grandfather, on a pedastel. I am just someone, not A Special. Maybe though it gives some background why I am very careful when considering this aspect of my own history and all our history, the history of the world. In solidarity Rudi Grieser https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UgHTlKlN4KU&loop=0

Haag is committed to providing a platform for serious discussions of controversial, forbidden, and underrated philosophers, texts, and ideas. Haag has published five books such as the Philosophy of Ted Kaczynski, The Later Philosophy of Pentti Linkola, and The Hermeneutics of Ecological Limitation and completes a new book on average every 3-4 months. He lives in the rural village of Uchakkada, India with his wife Minu and is very fortunate to be able to survive on a very small amount of money. However, because of his visa status he is unable to work in India and relies on book sales to get by. Your support will enable him to continue writing rigorous philosophical critiques of monumental thinkers such as Kaczynski, Greer, Linkola, Evola, Zerzan, Ruppert etc. which the academic industry ignores for biased political reasons. In addition, your support will allow a new school of philosophy to materialize. Whereas the average cost for one year of college in the USA is $37,000 for an absolutely abysmal quality of education, for as little as $1 per month we can start a school more rigorous than the so-called \"top PhD programs in America.\" This will be called the \"School of Forbidden Texts\" for its willingness to read books listed on the modern secular academy's own Index Librorum Prohibitorum,

dialectical thinkers like Hegel, Jung, and Steiner

Very interesting interview. I have also been very interested in Dugin's thought, and his personality for several years now. I will write in to this comment some of the thoughts I've had regarding his work and personality over the years.

There is a kind of a mystical text on the internet by Dugin called \"Nouse, supi\" (\"Rise, raccoon dog\") which has been published only in Finnish as far as I know. It caught my attention and had some very profound insights into the mystical North, connecting it with sleep paralysis, nostalgia, mythical Hyperborea, and many other things. Reading it, it felt like Dugin really had some great insight into the Finnish soul. I have not read his book The History and Worldview of the Finno-Ugric Civilization, but I am very interested in what he has to say there.

Mr. Dugin is of course a somewhat controversial figure in Finland due to his book Foundations of Geopolitics for the Russian military, where he outlined a plan to make Finland part of Russia again. Because of this book and especially the short section concerning Finland, Mr. Dugin is feared by many people, he is seen as dangerous, even his ideas are seen as dangerous, and, it is suggested he has this agenda of imperial conquest whether he openly admits it or not. It would be great if Dugin's idea of dialogue between the peoples would happen, so that all countries and peoples could understand each others perspectives and wars could be avoided. Unfortunately the Finns, or rather those international globalists who wield such incredible influence on the mind of the Finnish people through their mass communications systems, don't seem to be interested in understanding the Russian position, and so they resort to cheap propaganda, name-calling, accusations of people who want to understand Russia of being fifth column, working for the enemy, etc.

One very interesting idea Dugin had was the Fourth Political Theory, I think it is an open question, which is calling people to participate intellectually in creating this 4th political theory. When it comes to the people being the subject of the revolution, or the movement let's say, this is great, absolutely. It's the people, not the elites, not the special interest groups, not the globalists, but the people, who grow from the land and are a part of the land, the people are part of the living space, and it is time for this living space and the people it produces to wake up and reclaim their land, from this \"liberal\" ideological system, which of course has turned into its own opposite, as hegelian dialectics predict would happen, all thought-forms always turn into their own opposites in the dialectical process of history, so it's natural liberalism has become anti-liberalism which wants to shut people into their homes and turn the whole planet into a kind of prison, with constant surveillance of movement, surveillance of the use of funds, and so forth and so on.

Dugin's answer to the rotten liberal ideological system, as exemplified by the Anglo-American Sea-Empire, is to unite the scattered remnants of the two failed ideologies, fascism and communism. From this pseudo-alchemical process the new synthesis of the fourth political theory will emerge, against liberalism, and what it represents to Dugin: that is extreme individualism, anti-traditionalism, and indeed in some Christian sense The Anti-Christ, Satan, Sodom, The Tower of Babel, and so on. In the idealized Russian imagination, Russia stands for traditional humanity and against the child trannies, pride parades, post-birth abortions and other abominations, cyborgs, human-animal hybrids and so on. However, in this era of conspiracy theories and paranoia, Dugin can also become the subject of conspiracy theories, for example relating to his connection with Thelema, Alisteir Crowley and the world of the occult. Is Dugin some kind of a warlock?

It is all very fascinating, but I would say the fourth political theory, which must now emerge, should rather be a synthesis of all the three former ideologies, including liberalism. Liberalism can not be seen as all bad, but the positive kernel of this ideology must be understood and embraced, liberalism can not be thought of only as a ideological-geopolitical empire of the 20th and the 21st centuries, but especially people in the west and Europe need to go back to their roots, when liberalism really got going in the 1700s and 1800s when nationalism, liberalism and democracy started to form. I think this great period of change we've entered can be compared with the Renaissance, the Reformation, or the Enlightenment. Dugin would probably say that the Enlightenment was a mistake, a horrible departure from tradition which led to the catastrophe of modernity, but I think we must see it as a necessary misstep, something which we learned from, something which was necessary for the evolution of human consciousness. Yes, but it is necessary that the prodigal son be lost first, so that he can return to his fathers house. Without the fall, there is no redemption, and thus if this enlightenment, liberalism, democracy was a fall, then it still was a necessary fall and a necessary step in the dialectic, the meaning of which must also be understood and integrated, not rejected. If modernity was a nightmare, then all the more we need to try to understand its meaning when we finally wake up.

I think, that this New Awakened Civilization which will arise from the ashes of the old order, must start as a purely intellectual, or spiritual movement, and it indeed already has started, as the \"golden chain\" of philosophy has been re-discovered, the dialectical and mystical traditions of thought which have been buried underground, or in the marginal, are making a comeback. It seems many people are becoming interested in mysticism, and in dialectical thinkers like Hegel, Jung, and Steiner. Europe is coming alive again, the Spirit is coming alive again, under oppression it grows stronger, in the darkness it shines all the brighter. As we learn to understand each other's cultures from the inside, for example as Finns we should also learn about Russian poetry, literature, philosophy, to understand their point of view from the inside, not just make these war propaganda caricatures how Russians are always war-like, deceiving, conquering and plundering criminals and an eternal threat. This real Russian threat can only be neutralized through dialogue, friendship, and genuine diplomacy, but it is the globalists who don't want peoples to come to peace. It is true that Russia is more authoritarian, but then in East Asia there are even more authoritarian and despotic societies, and the west simply can not try and force its individualism on them. However, if this dialogue between peoples is allowed to happen, then the best ideas will win eventually, if the process of the dialectic is allowed to play out without censorship and manipulation attempts by forces who do not care about truth, but only about power over others. The proponents of individualism must speak too, let all viewpoints be heard and considered. The east and the west, the north and the south, all of human peoples and civilizations should come to a serious dialogue, and a serious dialectical process with each other for the good of humanity.

Dugin says he does not like Zizek, but I think the Dugin-Zizek debate would be an extremely interesting super-event. We saw Zizek vs Peterson, and clearly Zizek defeated the Canadian thinker, but we also saw Dugin debate Bernard Henri Levy and come out as the victor. So now that the semi-finals are over, it's time for Dugin and Zizek to debate. They are the only two public philosophers of the 21st century with truly global interest and impact. Their public debate could be the Socratic dialogue which catalyzes the thinking process of mankind, and awakens wisdom from her slumber, it could even unite the far left and the far right against the neo-liberal capitalist hegemony and possibly even bring peace between the east and the west.

muyinteresanteStephen Taylor* Why Stephen Taylor? - \"I believe thatness is raw apprehension, the registering of a particular entity as existent. When we identify a particular existence as something, that identity is its whatness (or “quiddity”). But even in identifying a that as some general what, the fact of its particular uniqueness remains as its thisness (or “haecceity”). But all these -nesses are done by minds, and done in some particular way (as opposed to all other possible ways), and this capacity is whoness. [..] Yeah. I’ll never be a real Scholastic, but I’ll certainly raid it for parts.\" Stephen Taylor t@anomalogue's \"Scholastoidal definitions\" https://www.anomalogue.com/2021/01/13/scholastoidal-definitions/
